Welcombe Open Studios, now in it’s 6th year, has 7 artists opening their studios this year and an art day for families on Welcombe Beach hosted by the National Trust on the friday. the 3 day event on the 12th, 13th & 14th August, gives you the chance to see where the artists create their work and to buy directly from them or commission them. For many of the artists this is the only event where they open their studios to the public. As well as visiting the artists studios in our lovely village by the sea, you can enjoy lunch or dinner at our local pub The Old Smithy Inn.
Most studios are within walking distance of each other (with the exception of studio 8 that you will have to drive to) but all have parking facilities if you do intend to drive – all studios will be signposted from the A39 and around the village. Detailed leaflets with a map to find all studios will be available from the local shop as you drive into Welcombe, The Old Smithy Inn, the village hall, Welcombe Pottery and all studios. All studios will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with the exception of number 6 at Welcombe Beach which is open on friday only from 11am – 3pm.

My work involves the use of rich colour & optical trickery to create depth & movement. I use a strange drawing machine known as a twin elliptic harmonograph, which creates very
fine & complex images (and no, it’s not like a spirograph). My studio will take a little longer to get to than the others but hopefully it will be worth the 10 minutes drive along the beautiful coast road.

The much anticipated Welcombe Open Studios 09 is here at last with new artists this year and 2 mixed exhibitions. Now in it’s 4th year, the event gives you the chance to visit the studios of artists, designers and makers in the beautiful village of Welcombe on the North Devon coast – to see where & how their work is created and to buy or commission work from them.
As well as the studios, Kings Cottage Nursery will have their beautiful gardens open (see images below) for visitors and plant sales (closed Saturdays). Our wonderful local, The Old Smithy Inn, will be open for lunch from 12pm to 2.30pm and for dinner from 6pm to 9pm. Cream teas will be available in the village hall on Sunday 9th august from 2pm.
Weekend 1: all studios will be open except for studio 6. Studios 10 & 11 have limited opening times – please see individual listings for details.
Weekend 2: studios 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9 will be open. The village hall will also have an exhibition of work by Gabrielle Goodchild, as part of the Drawn to the Valley open studios event, from the 29th august. For details of Gabrielle’s exhibition click here.
